Dissertation Proposal Development (DPD) Program

Spring workshop early June: The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship, or DPDF, provided workshops, exploratory summer research, and writing guided by peer review and faculty mentorship. SSRC has been in operation for more than ninety years. ACLS invites applications from scholars pursuing research in any discipline of the humanities and related social science on topics grounded in any time period, world region, or humanistic methodology. The Graduate School does not accept transfer credit in lieu of the 9 letter-graded minimum course requirement.

This reconfiguration eliminated the faculty field competition and thematic workshop components while becoming accessible to more students in the humanities and social sciences, regardless of topic, who were in the early stages of dissertation proposal development.

Many will recognize these questions as similar to those asked by their actors, but dissertation-writers will also recognize these as questions they must ask themselves each and every time they sit down to write. Individual departments or programs determine the character of this examination.

The ACLS Fellowship program includes a joint fellowship with the New York Public Library additional information belowas well as named awards made possible by generous donors.

Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship

ACLS Fellowships are intended as salary replacement to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time research and writing. Fellows conducted a minimum of six weeks of research away from their home institutions to establish contacts, find sources, identify sites, review new literatures, and test the feasibility of their initial research questions, methods of investigation, and analytic approaches.

In partnership with the Social Science Research Council, the UMass Boston-SSRC Transdisciplinary Dissertation Proposal Development Program is designed for students who are ready to develop their dissertation proposals.
